These are Dorsey-style fly fishing indicators made from polypropylene yarn fibers. This synthetic material does not soak up water (unlike wool or cotton) and therefore will not lose their floating ability while you are fishing.
Dorsey indicators are very light and will not affect your casting the way many bobber-style indicators will, they also land softly on the water and will not create a disturbance that may frighten the fish.
These indicators include 1/4" latex elastic bands used for attaching to the fly line (lots of videos on YouTube on how to do this). They slide easily along your leader while still remaining in place while casting. They are also easily removed and reused (unlike some other yarn-based indicator types) and will not damage your leader so that you can easily switch back and forth between fishing with or without an indicator. Putting a little floatant on the dry indicator makes it float very well for several hours.
